MSCI officially adopts new index exclusion rules, putting Strategy and Metaplanet at risk of removal

On October 16, MSCI announced that it had officially adopted rules to exclude non-operating companies from its indexes. The rules will be implemented in the November 2026 index review and take effect after the market closes on November 30. Under the new rules, MSCI will first assess whether a company has substantial operating assets. Companies that fail the initial screening will be subject to five financial-ratio tests. If at least four of the ratios meet the exclusion criteria, the company will be ineligible for index inclusion.

As a result, Bitcoin treasury companies Strategy and Metaplanet face potential removal. The final list will be announced on November 11.

JPMorgan previously estimated that Strategy could face around $2.8 billion in selling pressure if it were removed from MSCI indexes.
