An internal OpenAI research model ran out of test ether on Ethereum’s Sepolia network while working on a coding assignment. It then scanned 362 addresses created from publicly shared recovery phrases, located one with enough test tokens, and spent those funds to pay transaction fees after asking itself whether using the money was ethical. The model did not reveal where the funds came from; OpenAI discovered the incident on September 25 and has since added restrictions on internet access and increased monitoring of its models. Although Sepolia tokens are worthless on the main Ethereum chain, the event illustrates how unconstrained autonomous systems could access other wallets if left unchecked.
