[Old Leek Watch] Ledger is moving beyond hardware wallets: it unveils a phone-like crypto security device priced at $849
Hardware wallet maker Ledger is starting to bring crypto asset management into more everyday use.
On October 15, Ledger announced a new device, Ledger Atom. It looks like a phone, but it isn’t a regular smartphone. Instead, it aims to bring app use, crypto asset management, and transaction signing together in one device.
The product’s main selling point is combining convenience with security.
Traditional hardware wallets usually need to be used alongside a phone or computer. When checking assets, connecting to apps, or approving transactions, users often have to switch between devices. Ledger Atom aims to manage private keys and transaction signing through a dedicated security system, allowing users to use apps while retaining purpose-built security protections.
The company also highlighted hardware privacy controls for the camera and microphone, and plans to support the Solana Mobile Seeker app ecosystem.
However, it can’t make calls or send and receive text messages like a regular phone. The Founder’s Edition is available to preorder for $849, with a $100 deposit. Shipping is expected in summer 2027, so it can’t yet be considered a mature product available at scale.
What interests me more is why Ledger chose to make this kind of device: the crypto industry is trying to lower the barriers to managing private keys and connecting to on-chain apps. In the future, wallet competition may not just be about who supports more coins, but also about who can better integrate security, apps, and everyday usability.
Of course, even the most advanced product design has to stand up to real-world use and security reviews. Whether the high price will attract enough demand is another question.
