【Old Leek Watch】 Crypto Token Launches -1
Farcaster changes hands for the second time this year—is it turning decentralized social networking into a “Network State”?
The veteran crypto social protocol Farcaster has a new owner again.
On October 15, Network School, founded by Balaji Srinivasan, took over Farcaster from Neynar. The exact deal amount has not yet been disclosed. Neynar only took over in January this year, making this Farcaster’s second change of hands this year.
But what’s more worth discussing than the acquisition itself is how the new team plans to transform it.
Farcaster plans to transition into a “Network State Protocol,” with the goal of extending online digital communities into the real world. At the same time, the platform will introduce new “social smart contracts,” AI content moderation, and human verification mechanisms. Users who accept the new rules will receive on-chain access NFTs; those who refuse will have read-only access through the main app.
This presents a rather interesting contradiction: Farcaster originally emphasized openness and decentralization, but now plans to manage its community through a unified set of rules.
Supporters may believe this can reduce bots, scams, and malicious content; critics may worry that governance is becoming increasingly centralized—and ask whether this could change the character of open social networking.
One more question remains unanswered: the future ownership of Clanker, the token-launch platform acquired alongside Farcaster, is still unclear.
