MSCI, one of the world’s leading financial index providers, has adopted new exclusion rules that could remove Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy), Metaplanet, and Upexi from its benchmark indexes. These three companies, known for holding large Bitcoin positions on their balance sheets, had already been identified as candidates for removal under the new methodology. MSCI’s final decision on which companies will be excluded will be announced on November 11. Being excluded from an MSCI index can have significant consequences, since many institutional funds and ETFs are required to track those indexes, potentially triggering forced selling of the affected stocks. It’s worth asking whether this trend among major indexes of excluding companies with high crypto exposure could dampen the enthusiasm of corporations betting on Bitcoin as a store of value.
