$2.8 billion. I felt a chill when I read the headline. After the U.S. market closed on Thursday, MSCI issued a statement approving an exclusion rule for “non-operating companies”: first, it checks whether a company has substantial operating assets; if it doesn’t pass, it then checks five financial ratios, and failing four of them means it’s no longer eligible for inclusion. JPMorgan estimated last year that if Strategy were actually kicked out, passive funds would have to sell about $2.8 billion worth of shares. The list comes out on November 11, and the changes take effect on November 30.
My first thought was that Bitcoin was about to get hammered. Strategy disclosed on October 4 that it held 848,000 $BTC ; after reading the article, I felt reassured: what would be sold is MSTR stock—it wouldn’t have to move a single coin it holds.
I came across this on the subway this morning and read it twice. Now it looks like I was right not to panic over the headline.
When you see a headline like “$2.8 billion in selling pressure,” does it make you want to sell your coins?
