The Sanhe Zhishen birthday party counterfeit-wine scandal is all over the feed? What can we learn from this blunder?

Sanhe Zhishen, a blogger on Binance Square, hosted a birthday dinner in Chengdu and invited a group of traders from the community. During the dinner, he showed off four bottles of Romanée-Conti from the same vintage.

This is a wine from a top-tier estate: it is scarce on the market, and each bottle sells for over 200,000 yuan. The four bottles together are worth close to a million yuan. The blogger likely posted the photo to show off his status within the community and cultivate an image as a “high-net-worth big shot.”

After the photo surfaced, wine-savvy netizens examined details such as the label printing, bottle features, and typography, and raised doubts. They judged that the four bottles were most likely counterfeits. The claims quickly spread through crypto community groups, drawing widespread discussion and ridicule.

A closer look at the underlying reasons:

1. The need to cultivate an image matters more than the wine itself

Binance Square is a community where traders gather. Showing off luxury cars, fine wine, and big profits is a common way to build a “big shot” persona and establish credibility to attract followers. Romanée-Conti is extremely rare and hard to buy, so having four bottles from the same vintage at once is highly unusual.

2. The counterfeit fine-wine trade is well established

Romanée-Conti commands a huge premium, and there are many counterfeit versions. Their appearance can fool most ordinary people, and they cost very little to produce, making them a cost-effective prop for photos. Looking at a picture with the naked eye can only raise initial suspicions; it cannot serve as legal evidence.

3. The backlash of lost trust within the community

Many “big shot” personas in the crypto world are built through carefully curated photos. Once a luxury item is exposed as fake, people may start to doubt whether the trading profits and wealth shown off were also fabricated. The persona can collapse overnight. This is the main reason the story spread so quickly.

Two takeaways from the incident:

① In crypto, showing off assets and luxury goods is often just a form of personal-brand marketing. Don’t use it to judge someone’s actual wealth, and don’t blindly follow bloggers like this into trades.

② You can’t verify expensive wine just by looking at photos. To confirm authenticity, you need provenance documents and an in-person assessment by a professional organization.

Don’t blindly hype things up or follow the crowd. Do what you need to do—have a bite of the 🍉 gossip, then get on with your day!
