Ledger distribution channels hit by hardware implant attack
The attack group spent millions of dollars buying genuine Ledger devices, then took them apart and fitted them with hidden components to capture seed phrases during initialization. The devices were then reshipped through distributors in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong. Ledger has asked authorized distributors in both regions to stop sales and has visited stores in Germany to buy back and inspect devices.
All affected devices were in secondary distribution channels; spot checks of official inventory found no tampering. This setback undermines trust in hardware wallet distribution channels. In the short term, spot OTC on- and off-ramps in Southeast Asia may become more cautious, and some funds may flow back to CEX hot wallets for short-term turnover, while demand for hardware cold storage could be diverted to software wallets in the ecosystem. The key thing to watch is activity in the attackers’ on-chain money-laundering addresses. If they start mixing and moving the stolen funds, selling pressure could concentrate during Asian trading hours.
For those of you using Ledger, have you ever manually checked your seed phrase on the device screen? Would you dare to transfer your coins to a CEX for now and wait this out?
