When that red candlestick came crashing down, Li Mo was eating instant noodles.

The numbers on the screen poured down like a waterfall. BAT plunged from 0.22 to 0.16, and the unrealized loss in his futures account had already topped 70 percent. The bowl of pickled-cabbage noodles in his hands suddenly tasted like nothing.

Three months earlier, Li Mo had been an ordinary office worker who kept his head down. He squeezed onto the subway every day, earned 8,000 yuan a month, and had saved 50,000 yuan over two years. Then one night, he came across a post saying BAT was about to join an ecosystem project with a major exchange. The comments were buzzing. Everyone said it was the next 100x coin.

He was tempted.

Fifty thousand yuan. Twenty times leverage. All in on a long position. His hands trembled as he opened the trade—not with fear, but excitement. When the price rose from 0.18 to 0.21, he felt like the chosen one. He was already figuring out which city to buy a home in.

Then the crash came.

0.19. 0.18. 0.17. He kept adding margin, pulling every last bit of cash off his credit cards to cover the losses. At 0.16, a liquidation notice popped up. His 50,000 yuan, plus the 20,000 he had added later—70,000 yuan in total—was gone.

That night, he didn’t sleep. He stared at his empty account all night long.

The next morning, he deleted every trading app, uninstalled Binance, and even thought about throwing away his phone. For the next two months, he went to work and came home like a zombie, afraid to look at anything related to crypto.

Then one day, a coworker casually remarked, “BAT’s gone back up. It’s at 0.22 now.”

He froze for a long time.

He didn’t open another account or touch futures again. He simply wrote down what had happened in his notes app. On the last page, he added one line: Never gamble with money you can’t afford to lose.

After that, Li Mo started saving 2,000 yuan a month. He bought a little spot BTC and left it alone. Six months later, he checked his account. That little bit of BTC was up 40 percent. It wasn’t much, but at last, he smiled.

Because he knew that this time, he could afford to lose the money.
