๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ Trump blocks live broadcast of military execution after bipartisan backlash

Donald Trump has reversed course on plans to broadcast live the execution of Nidal Malik Hasan, a former Army psychiatrist convicted of the 2009 shooting at Fort Hood military base in Texas.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had defended the broadcast as a way to demonstrate the consequences of terrorism. The proposal, however, drew criticism from Republican and Democratic lawmakers, as well as survivors of the attack.

Hasan killed 13 people and wounded 32 others. His execution by firing squad is scheduled for December 3, 2026, although appeals could change the timeline.

A poll released by The Washington Post, ABC News, and Ipsos found that about 80% of Americans surveyed opposed the live broadcast.

The episode highlights a difficult debate: To what extent should state punishment be public as a deterrent, without turning justice into a spectacle?

Trump's decision leaves the execution on schedule but ends the proposal to broadcast it to the public.
