September CPI came in at 3.7% headline (vs 3.6% expected) and 2.6% core (vs 2.5%) — core held at 0.3% MoM for a second straight month rather than cooling. Traders moved to price three more Fed hikes by end-2027, putting market pricing ~50bps above the Fed’s own dot plot median. Bitcoin fell below $83,000, gold dropped $40 to $4,129, silver -2%, Nasdaq futures -0.5% — everything moved on the same rate channel simultaneously. The composition complicates the hawkish read: gasoline +7.3% MoM accounts for most of the headline beat, and energy-driven inflation is what monetary policy has least purchase on. Galaxy Research: 55.1% of Bitcoin supply sits in unattributed addresses, likely mostly individual self-custody.Hot CPI Print Lifts US Inflation to 3.7%, Gold Drops $40September headline CPI: 3.7% YoY (vs 3.6% expected, up from 3.4%); core: 2.6% (vs 2.5% expected, up from 2.4%); core monthly: 0.3% (vs 0.2% expected, same as August). The framing matters: core didn’t accelerate, it failed to slow — forecasters were looking for a step down that didn’t arrive, so the beat reflects stalled progress at 0.3% MoM, annualizing to ~3.7%. Gasoline +7.3% MoM accounts for the 1.1 percentage point gap between headline and core; energy is excluded from core, so the fuel spike landed entirely in the headline. This is supply-driven rather than broad-based — monetary policy has least purchase on crude prices. Gold -$40 to $4,129.60, silver -$1 to $58.07, the mechanical response to higher expected real yields raising the opportunity cost of non-yielding assets. The signal to watch: core monthly breaking below 0.3%, which it has now failed to do for two consecutive months.Traders Bet on Three More Fed Hikes, Overtaking the Fed’s Own ForecastShort-term rate futures fell Wednesday as traders moved to price three more Fed hikes through end-2027. The fed funds midpoint sits at 3.875%; three more hikes imply ~4.625%, roughly 50bps above the Fed’s own September dot plot median of 4.1% for 2027. The direction of the gap has inverted: for most of Q3, markets priced less tightening than the Fed signalled; markets have now jumped past it. DXY climbed ~0.40 points to 102.52 — wider expected US rate differentials draw capital toward dollar assets. The composition caveat: September’s core overshoot was gasoline-driven, and energy-driven inflation is the kind monetary policy has least purchase on. Markets priced the overshoot anyway because core’s refusal to slow for a second month provides a defensible justification beyond just the headline.Bitcoin Loses $83,000 Again as One Inflation Print Turns Stocks, Gold and Crypto Negative TogetherBitcoin fell below $83,000 within minutes of the CPI release — the third time this week the level has changed hands (below after Monday’s selloff, reclaimed Tuesday, lost Wednesday). The round trip rather than fresh leg lower confirms the rebound was a positioning move rather than a shift in underlying bid — a recovery that one data point can fully undo was never durable. All major asset classes moved the same direction in the same session: Nasdaq futures -0.5%, gold -1%, silver -2%, Bitcoin lower. That coordination points to a single driver (expected rate path) rather than anything market-specific. Magnitudes were modest — a 0.1 percentage point inflation overshoot produced orderly adjustments, not distress. What would change the picture: core monthly CPI breaking below 0.3%, which it has now failed for two consecutive months.Over Half of Bitcoin Supply Sits in Unattributed AddressesGalaxy Research: 55.1% of Bitcoin supply (~11.07M of 20.098M BTC) sits in addresses it cannot attribute to any known owner. Research Director Alex Thorn’s interpretation: the majority is likely individual self-custody — the original use case, still the largest single category. Among labeled holdings: exchanges 17.9% (~3.60M BTC), custodians/miners/companies 15.4% (~3.10M BTC), ETFs and funds 6.0% (~1.21M BTC). The exchange float is nearly 3x the entire ETF complex despite ETFs drawing most institutional attention since launch. Patoshi — the mining pattern linked to Satoshi — accounts for 5.6% (~1.13M BTC) that has never moved. The key implication for flow analysis: exchange reserves, ETF inflows, and treasury disclosures describe only the visible 44.9% — inferences about aggregate holder behavior drawn from them are inferences about a minority of coins. Thorn’s self-custody conclusion is an interpretation of the unattributed bucket, not a measurement of it.Three Major Indices Close Lower, Storage Chip Stocks Pressured by Korean Market RoutS&P 500 edged down, Nasdaq -0.15%, Dow -179 points (0.35%) despite being up as much as 460 points intraday — Tuesday’s session ending on the lows. Korean KOSPI’s 5.5% plunge to its lowest since July 31 (valuation concerns plus Chinese competition) pulled storage chips lower: Micron -5%, SK Hynix -4%, SanDisk -2%, Seagate and Western Digital -2%. JPMorgan missed Q3 estimates but raised 2026 net interest income guidance (stock flat); Wells Fargo -2%; Goldman Sachs edged higher on revenue beat. FactSet: analysts expect S&P 500 profits to rise nearly 30% YoY. The 10-year yield eased to 5.193% from last week’s 5.364% peak. CME FedWatch: 80.6% probability of an October hold, up from 51% a month ago. Goldman, Morgan Stanley, and Citi see growing value in Treasuries — Saxo’s Charu Chanana calls it a “tactical rebound” rather than sustained recovery given sticky inflation, elevated oil, and massive government borrowing.
