The PQLN project, together with East Texas A&M University and three other institutions, built and tested the first post-quantum defense for the Lightning Network of #Bitcoin . It was developed using the Rust-Lightning library and required around 11,000 lines of code after several months of work. Importantly, PQLN does not modify Bitcoin’s main network or consensus; it focuses exclusively on securing Lightning’s fast-payment layer and channels.

There is concern that a sufficiently powerful quantum computer could break today’s classical cryptographic algorithms in the future. A hacker could also collect and store encrypted network traffic today to decrypt it later. PQLN was designed specifically to get ahead of that threat in the realm of off-chain communications.
