Tesla’s New Roadster Really Flew: Engineering Showcase or Glimpse of the Future?

Today’s hottest Tesla story is the next-generation Roadster unveiled at SpaceX’s test site in Texas.

This supercar, delayed for nearly a decade, has finally become more than a PowerPoint presentation. In a live demonstration, it used SpaceX cold-gas thrusters to go from 0 to 60 mph in under a second (about 0.81 seconds), flip in midair, jump over a row of semi-trucks, and even drive upside down. Tesla shares surged 4–5% in premarket trading. Musk says production won’t begin until 2028. The price hasn’t been set, but it’s sure to be an ultra-high-end toy.

First and foremost, this is a top-tier engineering showcase—and the best advertisement yet for collaboration between Tesla and SpaceX. Cold-gas thrusters aren’t sci-fi special effects; they’re real aerospace technology brought down to the automotive level. Turning the “cars can fly” meme into a controlled demonstration shows that Tesla still has an edge in extreme performance and systems integration. For those who say Tesla does nothing but tell stories, this is a resounding slap in the face.

But it will do little for Tesla’s core business. However cool the Roadster may be, it’s still a low-volume halo product. Even a few thousand sales would be a lot, and its contribution to overall deliveries and profits will be negligible. Robotaxi, Optimus, and energy remain the real pillars supporting Tesla’s valuation. This launch feels more like a reminder to the market that Tesla’s moat isn’t just software: its hardware engineering is formidable too, and collaboration across companies (Tesla + SpaceX) is accelerating. That’s also rekindled speculation about a merger, which analysts at Barclays and others have raised.

Looking at it rationally, 2028 is still a long way off, and regulation, cost, and reliability are all unknowns. The flying capability will most likely be limited to a demonstration version or an optional package—something ordinary people won’t be able to buy or use. But the message is clear: Tesla is still trying to redefine the boundaries of what a “car” can be, rather than just competing on price and range.

I like companies that dare to put on a show like this. As electric vehicles become increasingly alike, it’s much more interesting to see something that genuinely takes your breath away once in a while than to watch endless price cuts and feature wars.
