The tallest building in Lujiazui lit up by Solana?! A giant screen on the Bund + an office in Shanghai Tower—what exactly is this blockchain doing in Shanghai?

I just saw that Solana has opened an office in Shanghai Tower and put a huge “SOLANA” on the LED screen at Citi Tower on the Bund—you can even snap a photo of it from across the river. Honestly, I was pretty shocked.

What’s going on here? It’s rare to see a crypto project being this high-profile in China.

I did a little digging into their Shanghai operations and found they’re not here to launch a coin:

- In March, they set up a “Solana Shanghai Builder Station” at the Alibaba Center in Hongqiao. It’s positioned as a developer incubator and technical collaboration space, with local support.
- In October, they officially moved into Shanghai Tower in Lujiazui, which they describe as the world’s highest commercial office space.
- They’re steering clear of sensitive topics like token launches, memes, and trading, and focusing instead on AI agents, robotics, Physical AI (embodied intelligence), and high-performance foundational technology.
- They’re also about to hold Solana Accelerate China, a four-city tour. The Shanghai event has invited people from Alibaba’s Qwen team and scholars from Fudan University to discuss “What can the world learn from China?”

It feels like they’re keeping financial trading offshore while bringing the tech ecosystem and developer community directly to Shanghai. They’re targeting local engineers, AI applications, and the robotics supply chain.

Even CZ reposted it, saying, “I’m surprised you can advertise in China and even open an office there. BNB Chain hasn’t managed to do that yet.”

Do you think this signals a policy easing, or is it simply localization as part of taking tech overseas? Let’s discuss in the comments.
