Whoa, is an exchange buying a bank outright now? 🏦

Payward, Kraken’s parent company, just signed an acquisition agreement to buy Finnish holding company Saldo Finance Oy and its subsidiary Saldo Bank, which holds a Lithuanian banking license.

A few key points 👇
🔹 Saldo Bank has around €164 million in assets (about $190 million); the purchase price hasn’t been disclosed
🔹 Its banking license can open doors to multiple European markets
🔹 The deal is expected to close in 2027, pending regulatory approval. For now, it’s signed but not completed
🔹 If it goes through, Payward will be the first crypto company to acquire an EU bank

What’s the plan? Pretty straightforward: interest-bearing deposits, issuing cards, and borrowing against crypto assets—so you can get cash without selling your coins.

Until now, exchanges have relied on partner banks for deposits, withdrawals, and payments. Owning a bank means keeping deposits, payments, lending, and crypto all under one roof.

Exchanges aren’t just competing to list coins anymore—they’re after your entire wallet. Would you deposit fiat in a bank run by an exchange? 👀
