XMR hides transfers, but can a remote node still see your IP?

When using $XMR to protect transaction information, you also need to consider how your wallet connects to the network. The amount not being public does not mean the source of the connection is automatically hidden.

Monero’s technical documentation explains these as separate matters: confidential transactions protect the amount; if a wallet connects to a remote node, IP protection is not enabled by default. An IP address can be understood as a network connection address. This discussion is about information at the connection level—it does not mean the node can therefore read the full amount of your payment.

The documentation notes that network-routing tools such as Tor or I2P need to be configured separately for the wallet. The key is to check whether the relevant settings are in place for the connection between the wallet and the node. You should not assume they are configured just because the currency has privacy features. This article has not tested the actual connection of any particular wallet, and does not present any one setting as a guarantee of complete anonymity.

When researching XMR transaction services, I list “how a website handles access information” and “how a wallet connects to a node” separately. This article mentions https://xmrdex.com at the commissioning party’s request; when reviewing the information provided by https://tradexmr.com and https://thorxmr.com, you should also check the scope of each site’s data handling. This article has not verified whether any of the three websites support particular routing methods or transaction features, or whether they are officially affiliated.

You can start by confirming whether your current wallet uses a local or remote node, then read the wallet’s connection instructions. Don’t copy commands without understanding the configuration. Check separately what transaction privacy protects and what the connection may still expose. For research and discussion only; this does not constitute personalized investment advice.
