The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics has just released September PPI data, showing a sharp 6.3% year-over-year increase—the highest since May this year and well above market expectations of 5.3%. The 1.3% month-over-month rise also significantly exceeded expectations of 0.5%. Meanwhile, September core PPI came in at 5.0% year over year, also far above the 4.4% forecast. September retail sales, released the same day, rose 0.8% month over month, beating expectations of 0.3%.

These figures clearly show that inflationary pressure on the U.S. production side has picked up again, with a marked rebound in wholesale costs. Although retail data point to some resilience in consumer spending, persistently high upstream inflation has undoubtedly added uncertainty to the path of future CPI readings. Against the backdrop of the Federal Reserve having just resumed its rate-hiking cycle in mid-September, persistent inflation has once again become a key focus of market debate.

After the data was released, financial markets quickly adjusted their positions, and spot gold briefly fell $24 to $4,143.36 per ounce. Strong inflation and retail sales figures boosted the dollar and short-term U.S. Treasury yields, putting near-term pressure on bullish sentiment. Commodities and safe-haven assets broadly consolidated at elevated levels.

For crypto markets, the stronger-than-expected PPI and retail sales data may keep liquidity expectations neutral to tight. $BTC and major tokens may move sideways in the short term, tracking macro-sensitive risk assets, as investors weigh inflationary pressures against inflation-hedge narratives. Market participants should closely watch whether capital flows are willing to provide support going forward.📈
