Data from global fund flow research firm EPFR show that, as of late September, the number of shares sold short in stocks listed on the New York Stock Exchange rose 2.7% month over month, surpassing 21 billion for the first time and setting a record high. EPFR believes this could be a positive signal from a contrarian perspective, as large short positions may eventually turn into buying as investors cover their positions.
