Security alarms are ringing again across the crypto industry!
According to the latest report from security firm Hacken, the crypto industry experienced 107 security incidents in the third quarter of 2026, with total losses of approximately $1.18 billion. This was the worst quarter for losses since Bybit suffered a major attack in the first quarter of 2025.
Four major incidents accounted for most of the losses:
💥 Bitget was robbed of approximately $387 million.
💥 The Liquid Network was attacked, losing approximately $320 million.
💥 The Tectonic incident involved approximately $120 million.
💥 A vulnerability related to Coldcard caused losses of approximately $115 million.
But what’s truly concerning isn’t just how much money hackers stole.
Hacken noted that around 77% of the quarter’s losses—approximately $906 million—were linked to third-party providers, development tools, security patches that had not been deployed in time, and infrastructure issues beyond the scope of security reviews.
In other words, the problem may not lie solely with the blockchain itself; it could also be hidden in the tools and services that support the entire system.
Even if a smart contract has passed an audit, attackers may still find a way in if there are problems with wallet systems, third-party security software, or key permission management.
Of course, some funds were recovered or covered by platforms. The report says approximately $387 million was returned or reversed, while the relevant operators absorbed losses of around $410 million. However, approximately $384 million was neither recovered nor compensated.
📌 The key takeaway is that security in the crypto industry cannot focus on smart contracts alone. It must also cover wallets, third-party tools, signing permissions, and underlying infrastructure.
For everyday users, choosing a platform means looking beyond trading volume and fees. For the industry as a whole, security capabilities are becoming a key area of infrastructure competition.
