#Thailand Opens the Door to Crypto ETFs; a Slow Start Is Expected

Thailand has opened the door to crypto funds.
Now that the new rules are in place, locally issued crypto ETFs are allowed.
But industry expectations are modest.
An asset management firm with a presence in Thailand says things will get off to a slow start.

Why the slow start?
Local investors are already used to buying crypto directly.
It’s easy to open an account on an exchange.
So there’s little incentive to switch to a packaged fund.

Distribution is another challenge.
To sell ETFs, firms need banks and brokerages to promote them.
Neither channel has its compliance processes fully in place yet.
Fees and tracking efficiency will also take time to fine-tune.

Regulatory pace is another factor.
In recent years, Thailand has taken a stop-and-go approach to crypto, easing restrictions in some areas and tightening them in others.
Licenses are granted cautiously.
Institutions looking to enter the market must first undergo a review of their qualifications.

In other markets, this kind of waiting period often lasts about a year.
Meaningful trading volumes will take time to build, as distribution channels and trust develop.
And building those channels is costly.

When it comes to crypto, compliant products don’t gain traction just because regulators give them the green light.
