Who receives the fees shown in the wallet?
My understanding: Layer 2 bundles many transactions together before submitting them to the Ethereum mainnet. Once the cost is split among them, each transaction is usually much cheaper.
Transaction fees are roughly equal to the amount of Gas used × the Gas price. Gas prices are generally quoted in Gwei.
What I do: I make sure to keep a little ETH in my wallet for Gas fees; otherwise, I can't transfer my other tokens.
$ETH is the native currency used to pay Gas fees on the Ethereum network. Current: 2370.75.
