CPI shock sends stocks and BTC tumbling! When will this downturn finally end?
The market couldn’t hold up after U.S. September CPI data was released last night.
U.S. CPI rose 3.7% year over year and 0.6% month over month, putting pressure on the market on both fronts. Inflation picking up again means the Fed’s path to rate cuts may not be so smooth, and another rate hike can’t even be ruled out. That’s clearly bad news for risk assets like U.S. stocks and BTC.
In the U.S. stock market, the S&P 500 fell 1.11%, the Nasdaq dropped 1.88%, and semiconductor stocks were hit especially hard. The market had high hopes for tech stocks and the AI industry, but with inflation and interest-rate risks back in focus, valuation pressures can quickly mount.
Interestingly, ASML’s third-quarter results, released yesterday, were actually quite impressive: revenue was about €11.66 billion, net income was about €4.96 billion, and its gross margin reached 57.5%. The company also remained optimistic about long-term demand for AI-related equipment.
What does this tell us?
Strong industry fundamentals don’t guarantee that share prices will rise. When the macroeconomic environment isn’t cooperating, even excellent results may not be enough to turn market sentiment around right away.
So, is there still a chance for U.S. stocks and BTC to rebound?
I think it comes down to two key factors: first, whether oil prices can fall and ease inflationary pressure; and second, whether upcoming economic data can restore the market’s confidence in Fed policy. If tensions in the Middle East ease and energy prices decline, market pressure could gradually lessen.
But if oil prices keep rising and inflation remains stubborn, concerns about high interest rates will persist.
So there’s no need to declare the bull market over just because of one big down day, nor should you rush to buy the dip just because results beat expectations. The key things to watch next are whether U.S. stocks can stabilize and whether genuine buying support emerges for BTC at key support levels.
What the market really needs isn’t more bullish stories, but signs that inflationary pressures are starting to ease.
