$960 million liquidated in 24 hours, 92% of it longs
Let's start with the conclusion: this was a typical liquidation of overcrowded longs, not panic triggered by sudden bad news.
1. Scale. According to Coinglass data on October 15, approximately $960 million was liquidated across the crypto market in the past 24 hours, of which about $880 million was long positions—92%. Over the past 12 hours, $669 million was liquidated, including $625 million in longs. Shorts almost entirely escaped unscathed; it was a one-sided slaughter of longs.
2. Price levels. Quotes on the morning of October 15, Beijing time: BTC was around $81,610, down 2.1% over 24 hours; ETH was around $2,414, down 3.7%, after briefly falling to around $2,317 intraday. These weren't high-level liquidations: BTC has already returned to the $81,000 range, but long leverage has yet to unwind fully.
3. ETFs aren't stepping in to buy. On October 14, U.S. spot BTC ETFs saw combined net outflows of $261.4 million; ETH ETFs saw net outflows of $19.7 million. Cumulative outflows since the start of October are about $715 million. Institutional money is still flowing out, leaving longs without outside firepower.
My take: with longs accounting for more than 90% of liquidations, leverage was heavily concentrated on the bullish side. These kinds of liquidations rarely clear everything out in one go. As long as spot ETF outflows continue, there won't be enough momentum for longs to rebuild their positions. This is solely my personal opinion and does not constitute investment advice.
