Anza has just confirmed that Alpenglow will be deployed on mainnet-beta on Wednesday, October 21, at around 14:50 UTC (epoch 1064). The deployment comes after 18 months of work!
WHAT IS ALPENGLOW?
It replaces the TowerBFT consensus mechanism, which has been in use since 2020, with the new Votor system. Validator votes are performed off-chain and grouped into cryptographic certificates.
Finality drops from 12.8 seconds to just ∼150 milliseconds: near-instant, immutable confirmation!
Activation plan: the network will use the old voting system for the first 5,000 slots (around 15:00 UTC), then switch to Alpenglow about 18 minutes later. $SOL is currently around $108, with a market capitalization of about $63.4 billion.
This upgrade aims to optimize throughput by a factor of 100, strengthen security, and achieve sub-second finality. Solana says the reported transaction count will drop sharply when validator votes disappear from blocks — this isn’t a decline, just cleaner data.
