Another wave of large-scale liquidations has hit the crypto market.

Over the past 24 hours, around $483 million in BTC and ETH futures positions were forcibly liquidated, bringing total liquidations across the market to nearly $1 billion.

ETH was one of the major assets hit hardest in this downturn.

📉 BTC fell about 3%, slipping to around $81,000.

📉 ETH dropped more than 6%, to around $2,350.

📉 XRP and SOL also fell about 5%, while DOGE was down around 6%.

Looking at the liquidation data, around $286 million in ETH positions were liquidated, compared with about $197 million in BTC positions. Even though the ETH futures market is smaller, the value of liquidations was higher.

Why do losses mount so quickly when prices fall?

The key is leveraged trading.

Put simply, traders use a small amount of collateral to borrow money and increase the size of their positions. If prices move against them, their collateral may no longer be enough, and the trading platform automatically closes their positions.

Those forced sales can push prices down further, triggering more liquidations and setting off a chain reaction.

One factor weighing on the market this time is investor uncertainty about the Federal Reserve’s next interest-rate decision. Concerns that monetary policy will remain tight have also cooled sentiment toward risk assets.

📌 What really matters is not just that nearly $1 billion was liquidated, but that leverage risks in the market are being unwound all at once.

Next, watch whether BTC can stabilize, whether selling pressure on ETH eases, and whether expectations for Fed rates continue to affect market sentiment.
