The amount of BTC held by governments is declining
Data shows that governments held approximately 647,231 BTC at the start of 2026
That figure has now fallen to 645,596, a total decrease of 1,635 BTC
But two countries are moving in the opposite direction
Kazakhstan currently holds approximately 3,544 BTC
El Salvador, meanwhile, has added 287 BTC this year
More importantly
A decline in government holdings doesn’t necessarily mean all of it was sold
Some BTC may simply have been transferred to wallets that aren’t being tracked
So what’s really worth watching
Is whether more countries continue to reduce their holdings
And whether any new countries start increasing their reserves #btc $BTC
