Up 41%, yet the funding rate is still negative—who is this market fighting against?

I took a quick look at the overnight movers this morning, and one combination made me pause for a couple of seconds.

WAL is up 40.88% over the past 24 hours, with a trading volume of 773 million U. You’d think that after such a huge move, longs would be piling in and the funding rate would have turned positive—maybe even spiked. But it’s currently **-0.3469%**, one of the most negative rates on the board, and worse than second-place BSP (+41.85%, funding rate -0.2884%).

In plain English: a negative funding rate means **shorts are paying longs**. In other words, even after the price has surged this much, shorts haven’t backed off—they’re adding to their positions, willing to keep paying rather than close them out.

There are usually two possible explanations: either shorts think it’s “gone up too far” and are betting on a pullback, or short positions are crowded, so if the price keeps climbing, forced liquidations may follow. The data alone doesn’t tell us which one it is.

What we can say for sure is this: **a setup of “surging price + deeply negative funding” means either side could get caught in a violent move.**

What shouldn’t you do right now? Chase it. A top-ranked gainer with a negative funding rate is a “window worth watching,” not a “signal to enter.” If you enter after a roughly 41% gain, the odds may no longer be in your favor—you may not be betting on direction so much as betting that someone else will panic before you do.

If you want to keep an eye on it, wait for one of two things: funding turns positive (short-side pressure may be easing), or the price pulls back on lower volume (sentiment cools). Until then, this is just one to watch.

One more thing: at the same time, BTC is down 2.46% and ETH is down 5.17%—the broader market is falling. So this is a classic **countertrend, single-coin move**. There’s a fierce battle over the asset, but that doesn’t tell us which way it will go.

Do you think the shorts are about to give up, or are new longs just getting started?
