Rate hikes loom, BTC falls below 81,000
U.S. September CPI came in at 3.7%, with core CPI at 2.6%—both above expectations. The outlook for the Fed’s October meeting changed dramatically: the odds of a rate hike surged from 22% to 47% intraday, and are still around 30% on Polymarket (according to CoinDesk). Put simply, the market had been betting everything on a “rate-cut script.” Now the script has turned a page, and risk assets are taking a hit across the board.
BTC briefly came close to $80,000 last night, down more than 2% in 24 hours. ETH and SOL followed, falling more than 3%. Liquidations across the market totaled $450 million, including $400 million in long positions (Coinglass data). Even more astonishing is how quickly institutions changed their tune: U.S. spot BTC ETFs saw net inflows of $175 million just the day before, but after the CPI report came out, they flipped to $150 million in outflows. That’s a faster reversal than a candlestick chart.
You know how it goes: as long as inflation won’t die down, the hawks have a reason to push. Whether the Fed hikes in October is make-or-break for crypto. The bears can smell blood; now it all comes down to whether the Fed dares to actually pull the trigger.
