More usage of a decentralized AI network means more buying of its coin, or so the $TAO story goes.

On Bittensor the token pays whoever runs the hardware. Miners and validators earn TAO as emissions, and since dynamic TAO it's what you swap into a subnet's alpha token to stake. A company renting GPUs from Lium or buying inference from Chutes pays an invoice, not a token. SubConnect's Bittensor Revenue Index (late August 2026) put paying-customer revenue across 24 subnets at 28 to 35 million USD a year against over 300 million in annual TAO emissions, so customers cover about a tenth of what the network pays out. Pine Analytics found in March 2026 that Chutes alone took about 52 million a year in TAO against 1.3 to 2.4 million in revenue. Cheap inference, funded by holders.

So ask three things of any AI token: who pays, what with, and what the token does when they pay in dollars. For Bittensor: real customers, mostly not in TAO, value reaching the coin only where subnets buy back alpha, which 14 of those 24 do. Paste a project's docs into Claude or ChatGPT and ask for the sentence where a customer must hold the token. If there isn't one, usage and price are two different charts, and $TAO at about 261 USDT trades on the second.
