Korean stocks trigger circuit breakers, Bitcoin falls below $81,000: CPI aftershocks continue to spread

After last night’s hotter-than-expected U.S. September CPI, risk appetite weakened further in today’s Asian session. Key developments:

1. South Korea’s KOSPI fell more than 8% intraday, triggering a Level 1 circuit breaker and a 20-minute trading halt. Samsung and SK Hynix both fell more than 8%, while the Nikkei was down over 4% at one point. Selling in AI and chip stocks was one of the main drivers.
2. $BTC fell back below $81,000. Binance spot was down about 3.3% over 24 hours, with a low near $80,226; $ETH was down about 5.8%, trading around $2,366.
3. Rate-hike expectations surged, then retreated: CME FedWatch showed the probability of a rate hike in October rising briefly from about 22% to nearly 47%, before falling back to around 26%. The October 27–28 policy meeting remains a key variable.
4. Institutional flows remain cautious: U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs saw net outflows of about $150.5 million on October 14 (cited by CoinDesk).

What to watch: In the short term, crypto prices are showing a stronger link with U.S. tech stocks and Asian risk assets. Volatility may increase around macroeconomic data releases and the policy meeting. Futures traders should pay attention to leverage and margin.
