🔥 Today’s Highlights
1. U.S. September CPI beats expectations, raising rate-hike expectations
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 3.7% year over year in September (vs. 3.6% expected and 3.4% previously), while core CPI rose 0.3% month over month (vs. 0.2% expected). Following the release, U.S. Treasury yields rose rapidly, with the 10-year yield climbing to around 5.3%. The market’s implied probability of a rate hike at the Federal Reserve’s October 28 policy meeting rose significantly, from about 20% to the 40%–50% range. Non-yielding assets came under pressure, and BTC fell by around $1,000 in the short term.
2. Institutions continue buying Bitcoin
Bitcoin treasury company Strive continued to significantly increase its holdings: it bought around 3,311 BTC (about $280 million) last week, followed by another roughly 2,822 BTC earlier this week, bringing its total holdings to more than 35,000 BTC. Large holders (whales) also showed clear signs of accumulation ahead of the CPI release, indicating that long-term investors remain interested at current price levels.
3. Major Solana upgrade approaches
Solana core team Anza confirmed that the Alpenglow consensus upgrade will activate on mainnet on October 21. The upgrade aims to reduce transaction finality time from around 12.8 seconds to approximately 150 milliseconds. It is seen as one of the largest consensus-layer changes in Solana’s history and could improve network performance and user experience.
In the near term, macroeconomic data and expectations for Federal Reserve policy will continue to drive the market. If upcoming PPI and retail sales data remain hot, the crypto market may continue to trade sideways or face further pressure. If signs of moderation emerge, institutional buying could provide support.
