Starknet considers going it alone as an independent Layer 1, aiming to become the first fully quantum-resistant network by 2027!

Starknet recently announced on X that it is actively considering transitioning from an Ethereum Layer 2 to an independent Layer 1 blockchain. The goal is to bring forward its quantum-resistant security target to 2027—two years ahead of Ethereum’s own plan for the end of 2029.

As an Ethereum Layer 2, its security still partly depends on the parent chain: bridge messages use elliptic-curve cryptography, while state data is published to Ethereum using KZG commitments. Both are potential attack surfaces for quantum computers. Earlier this month, co-founder Eli Ben-Sasson also posted that advances in AI could make cryptographic threats arrive sooner than expected.

The transition would give Starknet control over the timing of security upgrades, but it would still need to address issues such as data availability, final settlement, and rebuilding its official bridge. Fortunately, it already has infrastructure in place, including $STRK in staking and multiple sequencers.
