Many beginners enter the futures market thinking it works like spot trading. That’s when things go badly and their accounts get wiped out. Let’s explain the difference simply.
1. Spot Trading
It’s the actual buying and selling of an asset.
For example, you buy Bitcoin for $60,000 and actually own it in your wallet. If the price drops by 30%, your loss is only 30%, and you still own the coins. You can wait for years until the price recovers.
- Advantages: Safe, no liquidation, suitable for long-term investing.
- Disadvantages: You only profit when the price rises, and you need substantial capital to make a good profit.
2. Futures trading
You don’t own the coin; you’re betting on its price.
You can profit whether the market rises or falls (Long / Short), and you can use leverage.
Example: You have $100 and use x10 leverage, so it’s as if you’re trading with $1,000.
If the market rises 1%, you make 10%. But if it falls 10%, you lose your entire account and get liquidated.
- Advantages: Profit whether the market rises or falls; you don’t need a large amount of capital.
- Disadvantages: Risk of liquidation, very high risk, and requires strict capital management.
My advice for beginners:
Although I don’t recommend it at all
1. Start with 90% of your capital in spot and only 10% in futures for learning.
2. In futures trading, don’t use leverage higher than x5 to x10.
3. Never enter a futures trade without a stop loss.
4. Remember: With spot trading, you can be wrong and wait. With futures, if you’re wrong, you’ll be forced out of the market.
In summary 👍
Spot builds wealth; futures can accelerate it or destroy it. Choose wisely.
