The XRP Ledger fixed an integer overflow vulnerability that had been present in the code since 2015 and that, in theory, could have allowed up to 18 trillion XRP to be created in a single transaction, 184 times the currency’s total supply.
The flaw was reported on September 22, fixed the following day, and the xrpld 3.4.1 patch was released on September 25. The company that identified the issue received US$250,000 through the bug bounty program.
The mechanism behind the flaw is technically specific: when adding up payment amounts that simultaneously consumed many offers in the order book, the balance could “overflow” and return to a small number, creating XRP out of thin air.
RippleX confirmed that there is no evidence of an exploit and that the circulating supply remains at approximately 99.986 billion XRP, within the historical limit.
