Lesson 54 of 100 — From my experience in the market

Trading pairs — What does BTC/USDT mean? And why is ETH/BTC something completely different?

Every price on the platform is the price of one currency against another — it’s called a trading pair.

In BTC/USDT, the first currency is the one you’re buying, and the second is what you’re paying with. The price tells you how many USDT one Bitcoin costs.

What about ETH/BTC? Here, you’re measuring Ethereum in Bitcoin itself. Ethereum could rise in dollar terms but fall in this pair — because Bitcoin rose more.

Why this matters:
1️⃣ A coin’s price against Bitcoin tells you whether it’s stronger or weaker than the market leader
2️⃣ If you buy using a BTC pair, your gains and losses are tied to two movements at once
3️⃣ Low-volume pairs have low liquidity, even if the coin itself is well-known

The rule: Know what you’re measuring your gains in — dollars or Bitcoin — before choosing a pair.

In summary: A pair is a currency you’re buying against a currency you’re paying with — and Bitcoin pairs measure a coin’s strength against the market leader, not against the dollar.
