On October 14, Standard Chartered announced the launch of cryptocurrency trading services in the UAE for eligible affluent clients. Clients can buy and sell $BTC and $ETH directly through their existing Standard Chartered bank accounts, without opening a separate wallet or using a third-party trading platform. The bank said this is the first such offering for retail/affluent clients globally by Standard Chartered, and the first service of its kind offered by an international bank in the UAE. Custody and settlement take place within the bank’s closed-loop system, with its wealth and retail banking and corporate and investment banking businesses working together, and the service delivered in partnership with Zodia Markets, backed by SC Ventures. The service is licensed by Dubai’s Virtual Assets Regulatory Authority (VARA).

The service is initially available to clients classified as “Professional Investors” in the UAE, with plans to expand to other markets later, though no timeline has been announced. Standard Chartered already offered eligible clients exposure to cryptocurrencies through ETFs, structured products and over-the-counter derivatives; this launch brings spot trading into the bank account system. Reports by CoinDesk and others published the same day confirmed that closed-loop custody is intended to reduce the risks of third-party wallets. Eligibility, limits and fees are subject to the bank’s terms and local rules. This is a factual description of a banking product launch and does not involve any return arrangement.
