Ledger has asked sellers and authorized distributors of its devices in six Southeast Asian markets, as well as Hong Kong, to suspend sales and remove its hardware wallets from shelves, as the company continues to investigate reports involving devices suspected of having been tampered with.
According to an announcement the company made on X on Tuesday, the request covers distributors in Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam and Malaysia, as well as Hong Kong. Ledger says the aim is to contain the situation until it can determine where in the distribution chain the tampering occurred.
The company confirmed that the incidents reported so far are limited to Southeast Asia, adding that it has not verified any asset withdrawals linked to a device purchased in another region. It also said the investigation is ongoing to determine who tampered with the devices and exactly where this occurred in the distribution chain.
This expansion of the request to halt sales follows an earlier step involving distributor CryptoBilis, which Ledger asked to stop selling and shipping its products. The case became public on October 9, following reports of cryptocurrency theft linked to devices purchased through that distributor.
Since then, users in other regions, including Europe, have reported finding signs they suspect indicate tampering with devices purchased from retail stores. However, Ledger stressed that it has no indication that its infrastructure, systems, services, or direct sales channel have been compromised.
For buyers, these developments mean that checking the purchase source, packaging integrity, and supply chain is more important than ever, especially when buying wallet devices through indirect channels. The suspension of sales by some distributors also reflects a precautionary approach until the investigation is complete and the precise point of failure is identified.
These developments come at a time when the market is increasingly sensitive to the risks associated with physical devices used to store digital assets. Users rely on the device remaining secure from the moment it leaves the factory until it reaches the buyer.
