Blockchain is no longer just infrastructure for crypto assets—Wall Street is starting to use it in traditional financial businesses, too.
On October 13, global custodian bank BNY and trading giant Citadel Securities announced that they had completed a transaction test using tokenized U.S. Treasuries. The goal is straightforward: to make the movement of assets between bond settlement and financing faster and more efficient.
What does this actually mean?
Put simply, in the past, if an institution bought U.S. Treasuries and wanted to use them as collateral to borrow money, it still had to go through the traditional settlement process. Funds and assets could be temporarily “stuck” in the process.
Now, BNY recorded a digital representation of a two-year U.S. Treasury on its own digital ledger and completed settlement within minutes. Citadel Securities then used the Treasury as collateral for overnight repo financing.
This is a real-world application of RWA—tokenization of real-world assets. It doesn’t mean turning Treasuries into ordinary crypto coins; rather, it uses blockchain to settle and finance traditional financial assets more quickly.
Why is this worth paying attention to?
