Solana has a confirmed date: Alpenglow will go live on October 21, a major upgrade that promises to bring transaction finality down to just 150 milliseconds. The change includes a fundamental overhaul: the current validator voting system is being replaced and, most notably, vote transactions will no longer take up space in blocks. The latter has an important consequence to understand: the total number of transactions recorded on the network could drop significantly even if actual user activity doesn’t change at all, simply because those internal transactions will no longer be counted. For the ecosystem, 150 ms finality represents a huge leap in usability, especially for DeFi applications and payments that need near-instant confirmations. The open question is whether the market will interpret this technical improvement correctly, or whether the possible drop in the transaction count will trigger unnecessary alarm bells that end up affecting SOL’s price.
