ENS is getting a new architecture, but it hasn’t been put to a vote yet.

nick.eth posted an executable draft proposal, “Activate ENSv2,” on the ENS DAO forum (posted October 11; the contract address was updated on the 13th due to a deployment configuration issue). If approved and executed, new .eth registrations on mainnet will be frozen on v1, and new names will be opened on ENSv2. Existing holders can continue renewing, with no mandatory migration deadline.

There are only two things you really need to remember: v1 freezes are reversible, while single-name migrations are irreversible—once migrated, a v1 token goes into the Graveyard and can’t come back. v2 uses a hierarchical registry, with more granular permissions for subnames, no longer relying on the NameWrapper’s fuse system. The grace period is shortened from 90 days to 28 days, but each name’s v2 expiration date gets an extra 62 days as a counterbalance. Fees follow EP 6.43 and can be paid in USDC or DAI.

The activation has five stages, and the DAO votes only on stage 2; Labs handles syncing, opens registration, switches resolution, and then hands v2 control over to the DAO. There may be a few hours in between when neither side can register. The proposal is still a draft and has not entered a formal vote; until then, v1 registration continues as usual.
