Coinbase is bringing the quantum issue to the forefront: it’s not a question of whether to prepare, but of starting now.
The roadmap is clear, too: complete the migration in phases over several years, gradually replacing existing signatures with quantum-resistant ones, rather than waiting until quantum computers pose a real threat and scrambling to respond.
But this upgrade comes with one firm prerequisite: everyday wallet security must not be compromised. Protecting against future quantum attacks must not create new security risks for users’ assets today.
As for coins that have already been lost, including those dating back to the Satoshi era, Coinbase says they should not be hastily folded into this migration; it would be better to discuss them separately.
When it comes to security, laying the groundwork years in advance is better than cramming once a crisis hits.
