Oil prices hit the gas, and CPI is back to check in

The U.S. September CPI report drops tonight at 20:30. The market expects headline CPI to rise 0.6% month over month and jump to 3.6% year over year—the biggest increase in five months. Goldman Sachs says energy prices rose about 5% month over month. Core CPI, though, is expected to rise just 0.2% month over month, putting headline and core inflation at odds. The Fed is split: Hammack says she’s open to a rate hike in October, while Waller says there’s no need for back-to-back hikes.

Veteran trader’s take: That spike in oil prices is pushing the liquidation line for leveraged positions across the board. Bulls and bears alike have to pay the Middle East toll.
