When I saw the news that Strategy had added 250 $BTC , my first reaction was: That’s it? 😂
Everyone, don’t rush to roast me—hear me out first~
Those 250 coins cost $21.5 million, at an average price of $86,194. Strategy’s total holdings are now up to 848,250 BTC.
Doesn’t that number look kind of scary too?
But if you look closely at what they did this week, something seems off:
In the same week, they spent $192 million buying back STRC preferred shares.
The money spent buying $BTC was nowhere near even a fraction of the buyback amount~
Last week was even more dramatic. During the week at the end of September, they spent $28.7 million buying coins and $176 million buying back preferred shares—that’s a full six times more~
What exactly are they up to?
Here’s how I see it, though I could be wrong 👇🏻
Strategy is now hemmed in by its own leverage. Preferred shareholders and creditors have priority over common shareholders, and how much $BTC each share represents isn’t the only thing that matters. Cash reserves are the real lifeline. They raised $5.4 billion in Q3—guess how much went directly toward buying Bitcoin? Just 9.5%! The rest went toward building up cash, paying dividends, and buying back preferred shares~
Saylor says “there’s always room to buy more Bitcoin,” but what he’s actually doing is more like “let’s get our own house in order first.” First, keep the preferred shareholders happy, fix up the balance sheet, and set aside $550 million in dollar-denominated reserves—then slowly add to their position 😂
To put it bluntly, this is “defensive accumulation” 😂
Buying 250 coins is for the market to see—a way of saying, “Guys, don’t panic, I’m still buying.”
But the really big money has already gone toward buying back preferred shares, which gives them a way out. If Bitcoin goes through another brutal bear market,
Strategy needs cash on hand to weather it. Otherwise, if the leverage blows up, nobody can save them~
So, I don’t think we should treat this news as a huge bullish signal and get carried away~
Saylor is still Saylor, but the strategy has changed. Before, it was all in; now, it’s build the bunker first, then move the gold inside.
This cycle is different from the ones before. Everyone playing with leverage needs to make sure they survive first before they can talk about conviction~
