🐧 While memes on new public blockchains pump 600% one day and give it all back the next, one is putting its logo on shelves at Walmart and Target.
According to recent CoinGecko data, Pudgy Penguins (PENGU) has fluctuated between a market cap of $480 million and $730 million. It’s one of the few memes with a “real consumer brand”: its plush toys are sold at Walmart and Target, it has a collaboration with LINE FRIENDS, and it even has a browser mini-game. The PENGU ETF filed by Canary Capital is still under SEC review. The new memes on Robinhood Chain paint a different picture: Super Cat (SC) was once up 635% in 24 hours, but quickly cooled off, with liquidity at only about 1.5% of its market cap (around $260,000 versus a market cap of about $18 million); Super Inu Force (SIF) peaked after gaining 389% in two days.
My take: on a day when the whole sector is falling, “divergence itself” is a signal. One group consists of “real-world players” with off-chain cash inflows and brand recognition (PENGU, and DOGE, which has ETF and merchandise appeal). They often hold up better during downturns and tend to last longer. The other group is made up of pure on-chain, casino-like new coins: they have high upside, but just as much room to fall, and thin liquidity makes them prone to “pumping fast and dropping hard.” The risks are clear: new coins on new chains have thin liquidity, and historical drawdowns are commonly 50%–90%.
Worth watching: progress on the PENGU ETF review, and whether DOGE—the “lowest-beta meme”—will serve as a relative safe haven within the sector amid risk aversion.
Do you value the resilience of “memes with a real-world presence” more, or would you rather bet on the high upside of new coins on new chains? 🤔
