📰 Why have feathers gotten lighter? Could Yemen’s war crush crypto capital in the Middle East?

Yemeni government forces have recently bombed Houthi militia camps eight times in a row. It’s not exactly thrilling news, so why am I saying it could affect the crypto market? Because the Middle East is a volatile region, and every shift in the conflict gives investors more reason to worry about global risk assets—especially since the Middle East is so close to where cryptocurrency originated. For BTC and ETH, this casts another cloud over the market.

Why does this news matter?
The Middle East has long been a geopolitical powder keg, and tensions in Yemen are rising again. Consider this: nearly 20% of the world’s oil comes from the region, so any geopolitical conflict can affect energy prices and supply chains. The crypto market has been strong lately, but its foundations still depend on a stable macroeconomic environment. These airstrikes have given the market another reason to worry: if a full-blown conflict breaks out in the Middle East, could the global economy weaken? That’s not just speculation—historically, every surge in oil prices has been accompanied by increased selling pressure on cryptocurrencies.

Market impact
In the short term, BTC and ETH will be affected by sentiment. BTC’s price of $83,993.47 is right at a previous resistance level. If the risk-off sentiment triggered by these airstrikes continues to build, the price could be pushed down toward $80,000. ETH at $2,564.54 faces the same problem. Instability in the Middle East could cause global capital to flee, especially in highly active crypto markets like South Korea. If domestic investors start pulling out, ETH’s short-term trend could take a direct hit. Historically, when the Russia-Ukraine conflict broke out in 2022, cryptocurrencies fell faster than stocks. We can’t rule out a similar scenario this time.

Trading strategy
💡 If the situation in the Middle East continues to deteriorate, I’m inclined to be bearish on BTC and ETH—but only if they break below the key support levels of $80,000 / $2,500. If geopolitical tensions ease, prices could instead find support from some investors seeking safe havens. There is a condition that would invalidate this view: if the Federal Reserve suddenly announces an interest rate cut, I’ll immediately reverse my stance, because macro liquidity would outweigh all risk concerns.

【Invalidation condition】This view is invalidated if the Federal Reserve announces a 50-basis-point rate cut.
