#CPIWhat
Tensions in the Middle East are escalating, pushing oil prices higher and raising concerns about energy costs in the U.S. This could cause headline CPI for September to rise more sharply than expected. In my personal view, the risk of inflation picking up again is still worth watching, but the extent of the impact will depend on how high oil prices feed through to consumer prices.
If CPI comes in above forecasts, the market may raise its expectations that the Fed will maintain tight monetary policy, and may even consider another interest rate hike. In that case, U.S. Treasury yields could continue to rise, putting downward pressure on bond prices. However, I don't think the Fed is certain to raise rates, as weaker economic data could change the policy outlook.
📊 My trading strategy:
🛢️ For oil: I won't rush to chase prices when they surge. Instead, I prefer to wait for a pullback or confirmation of the trend before considering opening a position.
🇺🇸 For U.S. Treasuries: I'll be cautious about taking long-term bond positions before CPI is released. If yields continue to rise, ETFs such as TMF and TBT could be highly volatile, presenting both significant opportunities and risks.
🎯 Risk management: I prefer to reduce position sizes ahead of the data release, set clear stop-loss levels, and wait for the market's actual reaction before adjusting my strategy.
