Here's how I usually read the market: For the top gainers, I check volume first. Rallies on declining volume are usually one-day wonders. For the top losers, I check the reason first—a catch-up decline and deteriorating fundamentals are two very different things.
Then I look at the market structure: If the gainers are all small caps and the losers are large caps, it means money is betting on high volatility, so risk appetite is actually low. Conversely, if large caps are leading the rally, that’s when fresh capital is truly flowing in.
My takeaway: If you just look at the rankings without checking volume, you’re basically handing your money to the market.
