Global interest rate hiking cycle

15 of 33 major central banks (45%) have raised interest rates over the past six months, the highest rate since 2023. This figure is approaching around 55%, the level recorded in 2018 and 2011.

By comparison, the share peaked at around 95% in 2022, following the post-pandemic economic stimulus, which led to a sharp rise in global inflation.

So far this year, 54 central banks have raised interest rates. For the first time since September 2023, more central banks raised rates than cut them over a three-month period.

“Higher for longer” is back.
