Ledger scandal: Hardware wallets found with backdoors; losses may exceed $86 million

MediaMarkt, Europe’s largest electronics retailer, has pulled Ledger hardware wallets from all its stores and online channels worldwide. The trigger was a German customer’s discovery that Ledgers bought from two different stores had both been fitted with unauthorized cables and cellular modules—the implants send your recovery phrase directly over a cellular network.

Ledger has confirmed this is not an isolated incident: the same issue was found through CryptoBilis, a distributor in Southeast Asia. Related losses may now exceed $86 million. Ledger says its own systems were not compromised and that the problem occurred in the supply chain.

My take: The scariest part isn’t how much crypto was lost, but the collapse of trust in the idea that “offline means safe.” Hardware wallets sell trust. Once the supply chain is compromised, even the most expensive device is just a prop. If you bought a Ledger through a third-party seller, I recommend moving your assets immediately to a newly generated wallet. Don’t gamble that yours wasn’t affected. When it comes to security, it’s better to be inconvenienced ten times than careless once.
