I opened my eyes this morning, came across a news story, and it made me laugh: Today is the last trading day for Bitwise’s Dogecoin ETF (BWOW). Trading will officially be suspended and the fund liquidated tomorrow. It only launched last November, and it won’t even make it to its first birthday.
The numbers are pretty grim: When it closes, it’ll have less than $730,000 in assets under management, and its total trading volume for all of September was only a little over $50,000. CEO Hunter Horsley called the whole thing “tragic,” and was quick to add: I hold Dogecoin myself—it’s not a problem with the coin; the people buying ETFs just don’t want to buy Dogecoin.
The contrast is even more striking: The same company’s Solana staking ETF (BSOL) has grown to $1.3 billion. One hand is holding sesame seeds, the other a whole watermelon.
So, has the idea of giving meme coins a compliant wrapper been disproven? Pick a side in the comments:
A: ETFs are for pension funds; meme coins belong in the on-chain casino. You can’t force a good thing.
B: This is just the first trial run. Sooner or later, Wall Street will package up memes and sell them to you, too.
